Ugarte's Poker Grovel #24, or Shortest ... Tournament ... Ever
Last night I decided to play in a $5 satellite for entry into a WPT satellite with a $615 entry fee at Bugsy’s Club. I don’t even need the “more” button.
You start with T10,000, blinds are 50/25. First hand, UTG, I folded rags, the player two seats to my left went all in and everyone folded. Second hand, QQ in the big blind, three limpers, including the small blind and Mr. All-In. I raise to T200 and get two callers. Flop is J-6-5. All-in bets T200, I raise to T1000, he reraises all-in, I call. He flips J5 and I am out of the tournament. Somehow, there were already two people busted out before me.
Chastened, I slunk over to the softer $10+1 SNGs at PokerStars. 2d place allowed me to finish up eleven dollars, but down a lot of pride.
There can sometimes be no accounting for the dumb luck of stupid poker players.

While I agree with CJ, it doesn’t excuse your dubious call of his reraise. I can easily see your opponent limping JJ, 55, 66 (maybe even 56s—some people do love those suited connectors) and then deciding to call your raise.

I didn’t say it was a good play, asphnxma, but on reflection, I’d still do the same thing. If I lose to trips, c’est la vie, but J5o?
As TJ says, “That’s poker.”

Without a read on anyone at the table, and on the second hand of a tournament in which you start with T10,000, I still think it’s an easy laydown. Of course, as I was driving home from the Bike today, I was reflecting upon how fine the line is between “smart fold” and “tight-weak”.

True - and I was thinking exactly that as I hit ‘call’. The only thing I knew was that this guy had gone all-in twice in the first two hands.
Smelled like a high jack to me, and I was willing to suffer the consequences of JJ. I’ll get him next time. Or not.

I think it depends on your goals and objectives, but unless it is, “well I don’t care that much about this tourney, let’s see if I can double up early and I don’t care if I get bounced” then I think asphnxma is clearly correct (his first post).
