The Color Brown? Really?

I just tracked a package on UPS’ website and noticed the following at the bottom of the page:

UPS, UPS brandmark, and the Color Brown are trademarks of United Parcel Service of America, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

FYI, UPS isn’t the first to do it.  Tiffany has trademarked its blue.  I’m sure there are others.  Harley Davidson has trademarked the sound of its engines.

Aren’t you a lawyer or something?  I don’t think crayola is worried, but a Mailboxes, Etc. franchisee with delusions of grandeur will have to think twice before trying to use a brown color scheme to deliver packages.

I hear that there is a fast food franchise that is similarly protective of its marks.

Sure, but Tiffany trademarked its particular, distinctive shade of blue—they didn’t purport to trademark “the Color Blue”

(frankly, I think Tiffany Blue is more of a Green anyway).
