Roll with the punches

I competed in the “Legal King of Laughter” competition at the Laugh Factory on Thursday night. The night was so close to being everything I wanted it to be.

The results were a total joke, but unfortunately it was the least funny one all night (which is saying a lot, given the “talent” of some of the performers).  There were only two people there who even looked like they knew what they were doing, and to be honest you even killed him—there was no question in my mind which of you should win.  You had the whole crowd going for most of your set, while he had some funny stuff but just didn’t sustain it throughout as well as you did.

And time limits?  He certainly went over, but Miss #3 went so far over, with the light on, then flashing, then flashing really fast, then turning off, then coming back on, then flashing some more that I was praying for someone to come out with a red flood light (or laser cannon) and say “Get Off the Stage!” It’s not even as if she still had the crowd going, since it never got started for her in the first place.

The only small benefit (admittedly very small) is that I won’t have to go back to the Laugh Factory, where they keep the crowd waiting forever before even getting started, make you stay an extra hour just to find out the results, then reveal that it wasn’t an honest contest to start with (or at least not one based on the ability of the contestants).

P.S.  The set was brilliant.  The debate stuff especially.

Wow.  Didn’t even place?  What the hell were the judging criteria?  Least likely to offend the Republican party?

That woman was awful.  I mean, she basically had one joke (calling her ex-fiance “Rat Bastard") that got her a couple of laughs the first time, a few snickers the second time, and dead silence every time after that.  There was nothing even REMOTELY funny about her set.  And Former Employer of Ugarte is correct in that she went WAY over her time.  I think the red light went into strobe mode at one point in an effort to get her off the stage.

As I told you last night, the only place I thought you lost any points was in “stage presence”.  Your material was excellent, but you seemed a bit intimidated by the stage.  I’m sure more experience well help overcome that.

Also, as a side note, I thought the Spider-Man material seemed a bit dated, myself.  The movie premiered back in May.  Maybe it wouldn’t seem that way if you led into it differently, rather than with “who saw spider-man”?  ...or maybe it’s just because I’ve heard it before.

Anyway, those are my only constructive criticisms.  You really did an outstanding job, and to not get 2nd or 1st was a crime.
