A glimmer of hope

Ilsa and I were having dinner last night with a good friend who happens to be a Republican, and I was ragging on her party’s abandonment of virtually all the principles on which it used to be based, until she politely changed the subject.  Towards the end of the evening, the couple next to us got up to leave, and as the gentleman was passing me he touched me on the shoulder and said, “By the way, I like the way you think.  I’ve been a Republican my whole life, and I keep asking myself who these people are and what they have done to my party.”

Of course, this is Northern California, where even the right-wing radio personalities are pretty reasonable.

the good friend who happens to be a republican did not politely change the subject out of an inability / disinterest in defending her party’s current political platform - but rather as an effort to circumvent the boredom that inevitably results from listening to left wing whackos range on endlessly over the evils of the republican party.  methinks one’s efforts would be better expended registering all of the illegal aliens in California as democrats so that they can got out the vote for John Kerry.  Just a thought.  That and it had been a long day and the good friend who happens to be a republican did not have the energy to fight the good fight - she just wanted to be fed.

Ooooh, I like this good friend.

Yeah, you’re right, Democrats are so principled.  I mean, look at the strong stand they’re taking on abortion, gay marriage, guns, the war, the Patriot Act.  Oh, wait.

Hey, good friend who happens to be a republican, isn’t what you said a long way of saying “disinterested”?

P.S., I have something of yours, and you have something of mine.  Let’s make a trade.

The illegals would vote for Bush. He’s the one clamoring to make them all citizens.
