Be Respectful And We Won't Have A Problem

I’m often asked how I deal with hecklers. I can’t say I have an answer, because I’ve never been heckled, though I’ve been interrupted twice. At Stand-Up New York I had to deal with an apparently drunk woman who responded to an election joke by repeatedly yelling We elected a moron! (the emcee suffered a similar fate). I thought I handled myself - and her - well (the crowd whooped at my response, anyway). It was resolved when her embarrassed husband forced her to leave with him. Then, more recently, at Village 247 a woman yakked to her friend during my set because she was drunk, rude and selfish. Her voice echoed through the very small room and ruined my delivery and timing. I yelled at her from stage and others tried to shut her up to no avail. It was pretty ugly and thoroughly unpleasant. It was resolved when I said “fuck it” and signed off.

But a heckler? Andrew Hearst has a video of a guy with the right idea. He starts with a classic (albeit waaaaaay overused) line, but finishes with, well, just watch...

I hope that I get more support from the crowd.
