Because it can't be all poker and ... wait a second!

Back to comedy.  More specifically, to my show at the Gotham Comedy Club on Saturday evening.

Thanks to the last-minute support of my friends, and the continuing support of Brother of Ugarte, I was just barely able to make my quota.  Fortunately, even if I didn’t make my quota, I would have been able to perform anyway on account of all the people I brought last week. The support that I have received in the past is starting to pay off.

Thanks.

 No Longer Novel

Last night I performed at the New York Comedy Club to a full house - that included only three people there to see me.  I probably could have called on people if I needed more support, but I only needed three.  I mention the turnout only to note that while I could draw over 60 at the very, very beginning, my pals have probably already started to get annoyed at the notion of a needy friend.

It probably doesn’t help that while my friends think it is fun to see me on stage (even if I suck, watching the train wreck is its own reward), they often have to endure a lot of bad comedy from strangers just for the privilege.  Last night would have been a good show to go to, though.

 Growing Pains

The best thing about being a novice comic is that even the bad shows are learning experiences.  Even when things don’t go perfectly, I don’t feel like I’ve already honed my craft sufficiently to think that the problems are insurmountable.

I was at Gotham on Saturday and the Underground Lounge last night. Both were learning experiences.

 Funny Lawyer Redux

Another day, another contest for the funniest lawyer in New York City.  The Laugh Factory hosted a tournament that they called The Legal King of Laughter.  The rules were strict: a three minute set, go over and you are scratched.  (I am not sure if this rule was actually enforced, but I took no chances.)

 The Healing Power of Laughter

After the tepid response my material got at the open mic on Monday I was worried.  Worried even though everything gets a tepid response at an open mic.  Even a good open mic like the Underground Lounge isn’t a place to get serious belly laughs.  Too much of the crowd is busy running their own material through their head and thinking about ways that they can improve your material.  Because every comic watches others and thinks “man, I could make that so much better.” Most comics are wrong, of course, but it is that drive that encourages people that couldn’t get laughs out of a child with fart sounds to keep plugging away.

Of course, a good night will keep you coming back also.  This was one of those nights.

 Deep Underground

Last night’s show at Underground Lounge was ... interesting.  The quality of performer was better here than at the NY Comedy Club open mic and the atmosphere was much, much better.  The other comics were willing to laugh and the general mood was supportive, not competitive.  Geoff Kole has put together a good room.  I almost don’t mind having to travel from from Eastern Parkway all the way to 107th Street

Support A Struggling Comic. But Not Just Any Struggling Comic. Support Me.

When not reporting on my declining poker skills under the nom de blog “Ugarte” I am performing comedy under my real name, Charles D. Star.  Which I concede sounds less real than Ugarte does.

Once we work out the kinks, the upper right hand corner will list the time and place of my upcoming appearances with a link for more details (price, bringer obligation, reservations line, headliner). In the meantime, they are listed here.

Upcoming gigs

Tonight, 9PM (arrive at 8:45) at Stand-Up NY.  $10 + 2 drinks.  I have to bring 7; I think that I have the number unless people bail on me.  (I may owe you big time if you show and someone else flakes out on me.)

Thursday, July 15, 7PM at The Laugh Factory in Times Square.  The Legal King of Laughter is another funniest lawyer contest.  $10 to get in, possibly a drink minimum as well.

CONFIRMED Saturday, July 17, 6:30PM (arrive at 6:15) at Gotham.  $8 + 2 drinks (I think).  I have to bring 4.  Call 212.367.9000 for reservations.

 Back to Back Laugh Attack

I never got around to posting my recap of last week’s performances as promised.  Even if I wanted to, I doubt I could have.  This whole redesign has taken me completely by surprise and I wasn’t even given the keys to the text editor until last night.

One hostile act deserves another, so I am going to willfully blind myself to the fact that nobody cares about these recaps and give you my take on my sets from last week.
