 The Debate

It will be blogged to death within moments, but I wanted to say that I thought it went very well.  Kerry was vastly better than Bush in terms of debating—his answers were substantive, clear and concise, and Bush spent pretty much the whole night on the defensive, often falling back on talking points that were at best irrelevant and made him look defensive.  I expected Bush to win this one, and I think it was a clear victory for Kerry.  Some CBS commentator opined at the end that Bush’s best moment came when he said he would fight the terrorists abroad so we didn’t have to fight them at home.  While that will probably resonate with a lot of people, to me it underscores the foolishness of Bush’s approach to the “war on terror”: the apparent assumption that there is a finite number of terrorists, and that they are somehow all being magically drawn to Iraq like moths to a flame.

Postscript: John McCain, who is on CBS now, appears as if he is being physically torn apart by the strain of having to support the president.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #44, or Cancelled

It was a strange couple of days for poker.  The kerfuffle at the Blue Parrot took a live venue off of my roster and, sadly, made it unlikely that I would be playing with Pauly live any time soon.  Still, I had Wednesday to look forward to: the monthly game at the Churchwarden’s and the A.M. tournament and its Loser’s Lounge ring game that lasts well into the morning.

But first, before things get out of hand, I interrupt my post-in-progress to put everything in black and white.  I don’t want to play at the Blue Parrot becuase of the decisions Ferrari has made about how the game is run.  That is the end of the story.  Yes, I am welcome back if I agree to “behave,” but I have been told that the things that bother me won’t change.  I choose not to go back.  No more Parrot for me. That is the whole story.

And now the rest of the story on Wednesday’s game…

Grovel Exclusive: Ugarte Banned From the Blue Parrot!

New York - With a headline stunning in the lenghts to which it has completely misrepresented the facts, Rick’s Cafe announces that while Signor Ferrari and Ugarte remain friends, they have also decided that maybe playing poker together isn’t the best idea.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #43, or Two Tabling Again

I’ve had enough of two table poker online.  Having the tables shift back and forth gives me a headache.  Playing in two home games, on the other hand, is a different story.  There were games at the Blue Parrot (Signor Ferrari, prop.) and at A.M. II (a home game of NL ring hosted by the organizers of the A.M. tournament).

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #42, or Party Party!

It’s been a while since I’ve written because I’ve been lazy.  There should be a better reason but there isn’t.  I also feel a little sheepish writing this entry in the shadow of the stunning performance Rick put on at the 10/20 tables and JCatz from the A.M. tournament’s even more impressive haul from placing 18th in the the $2500+100 No Limit event at the Borgata after qualifying by satellite earlier this month.
I two tabled it last night on Party and came out ahead.  I don’t know why that sounds like a major accomplishment, but it does feel good to split concentration without really losing focus.  Especially under these circumstances.

Join me for some two-table blogging action.

A Cautionary Tale? OK, not really

I haven’t really felt like blogging lately.  The political thing is just so surreal and reality is so depressing that I’d rather spend my political energies elsewhere.  As for the rest, I’ve been to busy doing to write about what I’m doing.  But Karol’s recent decision to venture onto Party Poker has prompted me to tell a little story about my experience with Party.

Signor Ferrari's College Football Report: Buckeyes and Big Ten Roll.

An impressive Buckeye win and the Big Ten replacing the Big East in my conference rankings are the big news of the week.  See those discussions below along with my disappointment of the week (think MAC) and what to watch for this upcoming week (think BCS busters).

A good week, if I do say so

Poker, comedy, life.  It kind of felt like it came together this week.  I know that this means I am going to contract meningitis tomorrow, but I am going to enjoy this pleasure wave while I can.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #41, or Back on Track

I was down to my last $23 at Party Poker.  I know that Party is supposed to be a school of hungry fish, just waiting to be reeled in.  I even agree with the consensus.  That said, I was on a bad run of sit ‘n go’s and something had to change.

I also had a few friends over for dinner and poker on Friday we played three small $5 NLHE tournaments, winner take all.  I took most.

 A glimmer of hope

Ilsa and I were having dinner last night with a good friend who happens to be a Republican, and I was ragging on her party’s abandonment of virtually all the principles on which it used to be based, until she politely changed the subject.  Towards the end of the evening, the couple next to us got up to leave, and as the gentleman was passing me he touched me on the shoulder and said, “By the way, I like the way you think.  I’ve been a Republican my whole life, and I keep asking myself who these people are and what they have done to my party.”

Of course, this is Northern California, where even the right-wing radio personalities are pretty reasonable.
