 IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It never ceases to amaze me how often NFL head coaches make tactical errors when it comes to clock management.  I also find that NFL coaches often are risk adverse to a degree where their “risk aversion” actually increases the risk that the game will be lost.  These two factors converged on Saturday as St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz made an indefensible error in the playoff game between the Rams and the Carolina Panthers.

Let me set the stage.

 Demonlover (*½)

Demonlover is about high level, hardcore corporate espionage.  It is also about sexual control and dominance.  Sounds like a good formula.  I was not impressed, however.  In fact, I was fairly bored.

The corporate intrigue angle was not believable and the sexual aspects were stilted, unsophisticated, boring and not very erotic.  For a much more intelligent, gripping and erotic portrayal of sexual dominance and control, check out Laura Reese’s excellent book Topping From Below. I highly recommend it.  Demonlover is playing at the Anthology Film Archives on 2nd & 2nd.

 Spam -- or just illiteracy?

I received the following e-mail during my hiatus, and can only conclude that the sender either is not familiar with my site (and is merely spamming people to get hits and/or members), or is unable to discern my attitude towards Bush.  Either way, it is an ironic reflection of the two predominant Dubya stereotypes, is it not?

Bush to Announce Ventures to Mars and Moon

The New York Times reported today that “Administration officials said they expected that Mr. Bush would propose a research and development program with the aim of establishing a base on the moon, as a prelude to a longer-term goal of sending humans to Mars.”

 Blog King, I hardly knew ye . . .

Well, it serves me right for disappearing.  I have been replaced as a permanent judge in the Blog King tournament, by none other than Clarified.  It was unfair of me to disappear without notice for so long, and I was a delinquent judge even when I was around, so the tourney is certainly better off with Dawn.  It’s a great tourney, and you should all check it out.

Tell them Rick sent you.  Sniff.

 Poll results (and new poll!)

The last poll asked, “If there is another major terrorist attack on the U.S. before the 2004 elections, will that make you more or less likely to vote for George W. Bush?”.  51 people responded to the poll, and the results were surprising (to me, anyway).

I'm sorry there was a disturbance, folks, but it's all over now.

Hi there.  The “real” world intervened for a while there, but I’ll try to pick up where I left off.

Actually, if you name it "Pete" it smells like a used jockstrap

There is no way, no goddamn way, that Pete Rose should be admitted to the Hall of Fame or to be reinstated to baseball.  In fact, his I was going to write a long entry about his potential reinstatement, but this article by Thomas Boswell says almost everything I was going to say, so I can keep this relatively brief. Maybe.

 2003 Movie Review

Slate has an annual forum for a number of reviewers to duke out the best and worst of the past year.  Even without Ebert’s participation, this should be a good discussion as always.  Enjoy.

 Reflections on a New Year

First of all, a belated Happy New Year to both of you still out there reading despite the irregular posting schedule of the staff at Rick’s.

2003, for reasons too numerous to mention here, was a very difficult year for me - so 2003 isn’t the year I want to look back on.  Instead, I want to look back on 1969 - specifically December 13, 1969, the day my parents got married.
