OK, let me get this straight. First, she’ll talk publicly but not under oath (message: I will lie, but not if there are consequences to me personally for doing so). Now, she will testify publicly under oath, but only if no-one else in the White House has to do so (message: I am the sacrificial lamb whose body is being thrown into the machinery of this commission in order to prevent it from reaching the really embarassing stuff).
What happens when she takes the stand and, says “Let’s not go there"? The NYT says that “President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have agreed to a single joint private session with all 10 commissioners, with one commission staff member present to take notes of the session”. Will they be under oath?
As I have said before, I understand that there may be sensitive information that requires that portions of the commission’s hearings not be made public, but there is no excuse for not putting these people under oath. I want Bush and Cheney in separate rooms and under oath, so when their stories don’t check out they can be prosecuted for perjury.
