African-American

My buddy Dawn notes that John Kerry’s wife once called herself African-American (she was born in Mozambique).  Which raises an interesting culturo-linguistic question: What does that mean?

My favorite quote from the ABC article:

“Joseph asked his mother, Betty, if he was adopted. “He is not adopted,” she said. “Mother doesn’t forget when she has a baby. And I had three babies. And he was one of them.”

And it begs the question, what is Lennox Lewis?

British, dude.

Where’s Sam with the black perspective on all of this?

Thanks for that helpful, and particularly uninspiring, response Rick.

At the risk of overstating the obvious (but Ugarte is on vacation so I can get away with it), he’s obviously not African-American, but if he is black (or colored or negroid or whatever the hell else you want to call him) why can’t black Americans be referred to as black?  And if he is British-African, does he have anything in common with black Americans?

I think he is African-American for reasons I explained in response to your comment over on clareified.
