Ugarte's Poker Grovel #15 or Getting Ready

I am starting this entry at 6:30am because, along with hand-made clothes at third world prices, I returned from Pakistan with a head cold and an internal clock that pays no heed to the rising and setting of the sun.  So when I couldn’t shut my eyes again at 5:30, I decided to download True Poker - the software I am going to need to enter the Poker Blogger WPT II, set up by Iggy.

I guess I should be nice, as True has agreed to host a tournament that I want to play in - but this place has some “features” that I think will ultimately drive me crazy.

Also, some more less-than-stellar play.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #14 or Lots of Losing

Not much to report (though this gets kinda long anyway).  I didn’t really get to play much in Pakistan.  I played some very low stakes no-limit with my host, but it was fake - just a teaching game.  I also would have had something to say about the NYC WSOP qualifier, but Pauly stole my damn thunder by publishing Coach’s tourney wrap-ups.  I can’t decide if I’m madder at Pauly or Coach.  I’ll answer that by the end of the grovel.  I do have Ferrari’s report, though, so I’ll publish his for the sake of completeness. He isn’t bitter; not at all.

I also played a couple of SNG’s last night, which were mostly uneventful, but why should that stop me.  Input is requested on one of them, so please do read on.

The Democrats have a lot to offer

For those who remember my earlier post regarding Richard Gephardt (D - MO), I give you John Kerry, courtesy of Wonkette.

 Interim Poker Grovel

It was one of the most enjoyable hands I’ve ever watched at Signor Ferarri’s home game—Not least because I wasn’t in it.

Because You're Not A Blogger If You Don't Mention The Passion

OK, as a Jew who hasn’t seen the movie yet, here’s a message to anyone who, for whatever reason, thinks that Jews are bad people and/or should suffer because they killed The ChristTM.

Why we don't know more about 9/11

Rick and I had a conversation the other day about our intelligence organizations failing to make the transition from the Cold War world to the terrorist threat world.  We both agreed that, even if we were short sighted pre-9/11, fine, it is time to clean house, put the past in the past, re-examine things and move in the right direction.  But, as Maureen Dowd says in an excellant (and less cheeky than normal) Op/Ed piece today:

The White House seems more worried about the public’s finding out how much it knew and how little it did before 9/11 than it does about identifying and fixing security weaknesses.

I find this to be (1) true and (2) very disturbing.  I think it is high time for this issue to get “blown up” and the White House called out on why the examination of our pre-9/11 intelligence failures hasn’t been more open.  Of course, we all know why, it is the 2004 election.  As Dowd also said:

It is a triumph of chutzpah for Mr. Bush to thwart the investigation into 9/11 at the same time he seeks re-election by promoting his handling of 9/11 and scaring us with the specter of more terrorism. He’s even using 9/11 memorials as the backdrop for his convention in New York.

 African-American

My buddy Dawn notes that John Kerry’s wife once called herself African-American (she was born in Mozambique).  Which raises an interesting culturo-linguistic question: What does that mean?
